12 Questions to Ask a Wedding DJ Before You Book (Temecula Valley Guide)

Your DJ does a lot more than press play. They run the sound for your vows, announce your grand entrance, keep the toasts on track, read the crowd, and decide when it’s time to turn the party all the way up. That’s why choosing a wedding DJ is one of the biggest decisions for your reception.

Whether you’re getting married at a Temecula winery, a backyard in Murrieta, or a ballroom anywhere in Southern California, these are the questions to ask before you sign a contract. We’ve included how we handle each one at DJ C-Zer and Company, so you can see what good answers sound like.

Experience and fit

1. How long have you been DJing weddings, and do you also MC?

Experience matters most when something unexpected happens: a late vendor, a rain move, a quiet crowd. Ask how many years they’ve played weddings and whether they act as the Master of Ceremonies (MC), the person who makes announcements and guides the timeline.

Our answer: Cesar Ramirez (DJ C-Zer) has 10+ years of professional experience as an event DJ and MC.

2. Will you personally be our DJ?

Get the name of the DJ who will actually show up, and ask what happens if they’re unavailable.

Our answer: For the most part, if DJ C-Zer isn’t booked, he’ll be the DJ at your wedding. If he is, you’ll be referred to a preferred, just-as-experienced DJ, and you’ll know upfront.

3. Have you worked at our venue before?

A DJ who knows your venue understands its power outlets, sound limits, curfew and layout. If they haven’t played there, ask whether they’ll coordinate with the venue or your planner ahead of time.

4. Can you DJ and MC in more than one language?

For bilingual families, this one is huge. Announcements, dedications and traditions land better when everyone understands them.

Our answer: DJ C-Zer is a bilingual (English and Spanish) wedding and event DJ/MC, comfortable with traditions like the money dance as well as classic American reception moments.

Music

5. How do we share our must-play and do-not-play songs?

Look for a clear process, like an online planning form or shared playlist, not a napkin on the night of the event.

Our answer: After your contract and deposit are received, we send you a link to our online form to make special requests simple. Our wedding package includes unlimited music requests before and during the event.

6. What kind of music do you play, and how do you handle guest requests?

A good wedding DJ can move between generations and genres without killing the vibe. Ask how they balance your list with what guests ask for in the moment.

Our answer: We carry hits from the 1940s through today, from house, hip-hop and Top 40 to old school, freestyle, cumbias and slow jams. Not sure where to start? Hear the mixes and tell us what you love.

Sound, equipment and the ceremony

Ceremony sound makes sure every guest hears your vows outdoors.

7. Do you provide sound for the ceremony, cocktail hour and reception?

Many Temecula weddings have the ceremony outdoors and the reception in a different spot. If your DJ only brings one system, someone has to tear down and move gear while guests wait.

Our answer: Our Basic DJ Package includes two systems (ceremony and reception), two speakers and a wireless mic, so the transition stays smooth.

8. How will guests hear our vows outdoors?

Ask how they’ll mic the officiant and the couple, and how they handle wind and sun. A quick sound check before guests arrive should be standard.

9. Is lighting included?

Lighting changes the feel of a room after sunset. Ask what’s included and what costs extra.

Our answer: The Basic DJ Package includes DJ lighting for the dance floor and two uplights in the color of your choice (red, green, blue or a mix). Additional uplighting and a projector with screen for slideshows are available as add-ons.

Planning, contracts and pricing

10. How do you help with the timeline?

Your DJ/MC should know the order of the grand entrance, first dance, toasts, parent dances, cake cutting and send-off, and how to pronounce every name being announced.

11. What’s your backup plan if something goes wrong?

Equipment can fail and emergencies happen. Ask about backup gear and who steps in if the DJ is sick.

12. What’s included in the price, and when should we book?

Get the pricing and inclusions in writing: hours, setup time, equipment, lighting and add-ons. Ask how far ahead couples usually book.

Our answer: Our package details and add-ons are posted on our DJ Music Services and M.C. page. We encourage booking early for the busy spring, summer and fall months, since those dates fill up. For an exact quote, request one here.

Frequently asked questions

How far in advance should we book a wedding DJ in Temecula?
As early as you can once your date and venue are set, especially for spring, summer and fall weekends.

Do we need a DJ for the ceremony too?
If you want guests to hear your vows and want music for the processional, yes. Ask for ceremony sound and a wireless mic in your package.

Can we give the DJ a do-not-play list?
Absolutely. A good DJ will respect it as closely as your must-play list.

What’s the difference between a DJ and an MC?
The DJ handles the music; the MC handles announcements and keeps the timeline moving. At DJ C-Zer and Company, Cesar does both.

Can we meet or talk before booking?
Yes. Call or send your date and venue, and we’ll talk through your music and moments.
